Typical Functions:
The assignment of supervisory duties is determined by the hiring agency’s operational needs. Non-supervisory roles will serve as senior technical experts.
Utilize state-of-the-art diagnostic tools and computerized systems to identify issues in engine performance, transmission, electrical systems, and emerging technologies such as hybrid or electric drivetrains.
Interpret complex error codes and sensor data to quickly pinpoint root causes of malfunctions.
Execute intricate repairs on various vehicle systems including, but not limited to, engines, transmissions, braking systems, suspension, and onboard computer systems.
Perform custom calibrations, system reprogramming, and adjustments to optimize vehicle performance.
Serve as the go-to technical resource for challenging troubleshooting scenarios and provide guidance to junior mechanics and apprentices.
Lead training sessions on new tools, repair techniques, and safety protocols to ensure continuous team development.
Conduct thorough inspections and quality control checks after repairs to verify that all work meets or exceeds manufacturer and industry standards.
Enforce strict adherence to safety protocols, ensuring all repair and maintenance procedures comply with regulations and best practices.
Prepare clear, detailed service reports and communicate technical issues and repair recommendations in an accessible manner.
Work collaboratively with service advisors to set expectations, develop service plans, and ensure satisfaction.
Maintain an organized workshop with up-to-date inventories of parts, tools, and specialized equipment required for advanced diagnostics and repairs.
Recommend and implement improvements to equipment and procedures to optimize workflow efficiency.
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:
Mastery in diagnosing and repairing advanced mechanical and electronic systems.
Proficient with diagnostic scanners, oscilloscopes, and other high-tech repair equipment.
Strong ability to analyze complex technical problems, integrate various data sources, and craft effective repair strategies.
Creative problem-solving skills to tackle unusual or recurring technical challenges.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills to clearly explain complex repairs to team members.
Leadership skills for training, mentoring, and guiding less experienced mechanics.
Keen eye for detail ensuring every repair meets stringent quality and safety standards while minimizing the risk of future issues.
Ability to stay current with rapidly evolving automotive technologies and repair methods, with a commitment to ongoing education and professional development.
Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED.
Completion of an accredited automotive technology program or technical trade school curriculum focused on advanced automotive repair.
Minimum of 4 years of hands-on automotive repair experience, including exposure to high-level diagnostic and repair tasks.
Proven track record of handling complex service issues with demonstrable leadership in technical problem resolution.
Demonstrated experience working with modern diagnostic systems and familiar with the electronic control units used in contemporary vehicles.
Certifications such as Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Master Technician or similar advanced credentials may be required. Additional manufacturer-specific certifications for high-performance, hybrid, or electric vehicles may be required.
