Farm Supervisor/Expert

The Farm Supervisor/Expert is responsible for coordinating and supervising daily operations on a state-managed farm. This includes implementing farm production plans, overseeing planting and harvesting activities, and managing workers (which may include state employees, inmates, or program participants). The Farm Supervisor/Expert ensures farm activities are carried out safely, efficiently, and in compliance with state regulations, and supports the Farm Manager with operational logistics and reporting.

Typical Functions:

The assignment of supervisory duties is determined by the hiring agency’s operational needs. Non-supervisory roles will serve as senior technical experts. Supervise and participate in daily agricultural operations including planting, irrigation, cultivation, harvesting, feeding, and animal care. Monitor farm employees or program participants to ensure tasks are completed according to schedule and safety protocols. Maintain and operate farm machinery and equipment; report mechanical issues and coordinate repairs or servicing. Assist in implementing the farm production plan as directed by the Farm Manager, including crop rotation schedules and livestock care plans. Ensure proper application of fertilizers, pesticides, and animal health treatments per Arkansas and federal regulations. Maintain records of work performed, labor hours, equipment use, and material/supply inventory. Provide hands-on instruction and training to assigned staff or inmates in the use of tools, machinery, and farming techniques. Monitor environmental and safety compliance including water use, runoff prevention, and equipment operation standards. Support harvesting, packaging, storage, or transport of farm products. Communicate effectively with agency leadership and participate in periodic planning meetings or inspections.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge of state and federal laws related to agriculture, modern farm management principles, and equipment operation. Knowledge of resource allocation, safety practices, and personnel management. Ability to interpret soil data and crop yields, lead teams, and make practical decisions. Ability to communicate effectively with diverse communities, apply chemicals or fertilizers, and think critically. Skilled in time management, organization, and problem solving. Skilled in troubleshooting, large-scale farm operations, and strategic planning.

Minimum Qualifications:

At least three years of experience agricultural production, farm operations, ranch management, or a related field.
