Vocational Instructor

A Vocational Instructor is responsible for providing hands-on training and instruction in specific trades or vocational subjects. This role involves developing and delivering curriculum, assessing student progress, and ensuring that students acquire the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in their preferred vocational fields. The instructor collaborates with industry partners, educational agencies, educational institutions, and employers in an attempt to ensure that the training programs meet industry standards and workforce needs.

Typical Functions:

Develop and implement curriculum and training programs in specific vocational subjects, such as automotive technology, welding, electrical, plumbing, culinary arts, or healthcare. Deliver hands-on instruction and demonstrations designed to teach students practical skills and techniques required in their preferred fields. Assess student performance through evaluations, tests, and practical assessments, providing feedback and support for improvement. Ensure that training programs comply with industry standards, safety regulations, and best practices. Maintain accurate records of student progress, attendance, and certification achievements. Collaborate with industry partners, educational agencies, educational institutions, and employers to identify training needs and develop customized training solutions. Stay current with the latest advancements and trends in vocational education and industry practices. Provide mentorship and support to students, helping them develop their skills and knowledge. Organize and coordinate training schedules, resources, and materials to ensure the smooth delivery of training programs. Cultivate a learning environment that supports student engagement and success.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Patience and empathy in working with students and providing support. Proficiency in using training software and educational technology tools.

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum of 6 years of experience in the relevant vocational field, including hands-on experience in the industry. Comprehensive knowledge of vocational principles, practices, and industry standards. Strong understanding of safety protocols and regulatory requirements in the relevant field. Excellent communication, organizational, and presentation skills. Ability to work effectively with an assorted range of students, including entry-level learners and experienced professionals. Commitment to ongoing professional development and staying current with industry best practices and advancements. Satisfaction of the minimum qualifications, including years of experience and service, does not entitle employees to automatic progression within the job series. Promotion to the next classification level is at the discretion of the department and the Office of Personnel Management, taking into consideration the employee’s demonstrated skills, competencies, performance, workload responsibilities, and organizational needs.
