Veterinary Aide

The Veterinary Aide provides essential support to licensed veterinarians and veterinary technicians in state-run facilities, animal shelters, research programs, and agricultural services. This position is responsible for assisting with animal care, medical procedures, record-keeping, and facility maintenance to ensure the health, safety, and well-being of animals under state care. This role requires a compassionate, detail-oriented, and adaptable individual who can work efficiently in a fast-paced environment. Strong communication, teamwork, and observational skills are critical for success in this position.

Special Job Requirements:

Typical Functions:

Assist in restraining, feeding, and grooming animals in state care. Monitor behavior, vital signs, and overall well-being of animals. Assist in administering medications under veterinary supervision. Provide basic first aid and wound care as directed. Clean and sanitize kennels, cages, and work areas to maintain a safe and healthy environment. Assist in preparing animals for examinations, treatments, and surgeries. Support veterinarians during diagnostic procedures and minor medical interventions. Collect and label biological samples (blood, feces, urine) for testing. Maintain and sterilize surgical instruments, equipment, and treatment areas. Document and report changes in animal conditions to veterinary staff. Maintain accurate records of animal intake, treatments, and medical histories. Ensure compliance with state and federal animal health regulations. Assist in processing reports for disease control and animal welfare programs. Communicate with the public, law enforcement, and other agencies regarding animal-related matters. Clean, maintain, and organize veterinary supplies, medications, and equipment. Ensure proper disposal of biohazardous materials and medical waste. Assist in maintaining state animal care facilities and shelters in compliance with health and safety regulations.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Basic knowledge of animal care, anatomy, and medical terminology. Familiarity with handling and restraining domestic and farm animals. Ability to recognize signs of illness, injury, or distress in animals. Understanding of sanitation and disease prevention protocols. Basic proficiency in data entry and medical record-keeping. Physical stamina to handle active or large animals and stand for extended periods.

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum of six months experience working with animals.
