Trades Apprentice

The Trades Apprentice is an entry-level position designed to provide hands-on training and experience in a skilled trade within a state government agency. This position involves assisting experienced trades professionals in various tasks, including maintenance, repair, and installation work in areas such as electrical, plumbing, carpentry, HVAC, masonry, and general building maintenance. The Trades Apprentice will gain valuable knowledge and skills through on-the-job training while contributing to the upkeep and safety of state facilities and infrastructure.

Special Job Requirements:

Typical Functions:

Assist experienced trades professionals in performing maintenance, repairs, and installations related to electrical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, and other skilled trades. Learn proper use of tools, equipment, and safety procedures under the supervision of skilled tradespeople. Participate in structured on-the-job training, gaining proficiency in technical skills and trade knowledge. Assist in preparing job sites by gathering materials, setting up tools, and ensuring a safe work environment. Maintain a clean and organized work area, ensuring tools and materials are stored properly. Work closely with trades professionals to complete projects efficiently and effectively. Follow guidance and feedback from experienced tradespeople to improve technical skills and knowledge.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Basic understanding of how tools and equipment function, with a willingness to learn trade-specific skills. Ability to follow precise instructions and perform tasks with accuracy. Understanding of general workplace safety rules and commitment to safe work practices. Eagerness to learn trade-related skills and concepts through hands-on experience.

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or GED preferred but not required. Satisfaction of the minimum qualifications, including years of experience and service, does not entitle employees to automatic progression within the job series. Promotion to the next classification level is at the discretion of the department and the Office of Personnel Management, taking into consideration the employee’s demonstrated skills, competencies, performance, workload responsibilities, and organizational needs.
