Tax Auditor Supervisor/Expert

The Tax Auditor Supervisor/Expert is a leadership position responsible for overseeing a team of tax auditors in conducting complex and high-level audits to ensure compliance with state tax laws and regulations. This role requires strong management skills, advanced technical knowledge of tax auditing practices, and the ability to mentor and guide staff. The Tax Auditor Supervisor/Expert will manage audits, provide direction and support to auditors, review audit findings, ensure accuracy in audit reports, and ensure that all tax audits are completed according to state policies and legal requirements. Successful candidates will have a deep understanding of tax law, strong communication skills, and the ability to handle complex taxpayer issues and concerns.

Typical Functions:

The assignment of supervisory duties is determined by the hiring agency’s operational needs. Non-supervisory roles will serve as senior technical experts. Supervise and manage a team of tax auditors, providing guidance, support, and mentorship to ensure high-quality audits are completed in a timely and efficient manner. Foster a collaborative, productive, and positive team environment, and ensure compliance with department policies and procedures. Oversee the planning, execution, and completion of complex audits of tax returns, financial statements, and taxpayer records. Review audit findings and reports prepared by staff auditors, ensuring accuracy and compliance with state tax laws and regulations. Provide ongoing training and professional development to team members on auditing techniques, state and federal tax laws, and department protocols. Ensure that auditors are equipped with the necessary skills and resources to perform high-quality audits. Review and approve audit reports, ensuring findings are thoroughly documented, findings are substantiated, and recommendations for adjustments or corrective actions are clear and compliant with tax laws. Address discrepancies and discrepancies found in the audit workpapers. Monitor the performance of individual auditors, providing feedback, evaluations, and coaching as needed. Identify areas for improvement and ensure the team meets both individual and team objectives. Address any performance issues with a focus on improvement. Act as a point of escalation for complex or sensitive taxpayer interactions. Handle taxpayer concerns, inquiries, or disputes that require advanced knowledge and diplomacy. Negotiate and resolve complex tax matters while ensuring legal compliance and maintaining professional relationships. Assist in developing and implementing audit procedures and internal policies to improve efficiency, accuracy, and effectiveness within the tax audit team. Ensure the audit team adheres to established procedures and stays current with any changes in laws or departmental guidelines. Ensure that the tax audit team remains compliant with all relevant state and federal laws, regulations, and ethical standards. Monitor for potential tax fraud or underreporting and escalate serious compliance issues for further investigation or enforcement actions.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

High level of proficiency in analyzing complex financial documents, identifying discrepancies, and drawing conclusions based on data. Ability to make informed decisions based on detailed audit findings and interpret complicated tax regulations. Strong written and verbal communication skills are critical for preparing audit reports, communicating with taxpayers, and providing clear instructions to team members. Ability to explain complex audit findings in an understandable manner. Ability to resolve complex issues both internally with team members and externally with taxpayers. Strong conflict resolution skills to address challenging situations in a professional and diplomatic manner. Ability to interact with taxpayers professionally and respectfully, even in challenging or adversarial situations. Strong interpersonal skills for fostering positive relationships with team members, taxpayers, and other state agencies. Ability to make sound decisions based on audit findings and legal considerations. Demonstrated judgment in handling high-stakes audit cases and taxpayer disputes. Ability to provide constructive feedback and coaching to help team members grow professionally. A willingness to invest in the development of the team by offering guidance, training, and support.

Minimum Qualifications:

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in accounting, finance, business, or a closely related field is required with a minimum of twelve (12) hours of accounting in accordance with ACA 26-17-203; plus four (4) years of professional experience in tax auditing or a related field, which includes experience in analyzing financial records and preparing audit reports. Satisfaction of the minimum qualifications, including years of experience and service, does not entitle employees to automatic progression within the job series. Promotion to the next classification level is at the discretion of the department and the Office of Personnel Management, taking into consideration the employee’s demonstrated skills, competencies, performance, workload responsibilities, and organizational needs.
