Surveyor

The Surveyor is a professional responsible for collecting, analyzing, and interpreting geospatial data to accurately determine property boundaries, topographic features, and land contours. This classification plays a vital role in construction, engineering, environmental planning, and land development by ensuring that every measurement is precise and legally compliant. Surveyors utilize advanced equipment-such as total stations, global positioning system devices, theodolites, and geographic information system software-to capture and process real-world information, producing detailed maps, charts, and formal documentation that supports planning and development projects.

Special Job Requirements:

Typical Functions:

Set up and operate surveying instruments (e.g., total stations, global positioning system units, theodolites) on site. Perform precise field measurements for property boundaries, elevations, contours, and other land attributes. Process and analyze raw data using advanced computer aided design and geographic information system software to develop accurate maps and diagrams. Translate field measurements into detailed drawings and reports. Establish and verify legal property boundaries in accordance with land titles, deeds, and local regulations. Prepare formal legal descriptions, survey reports, and documentation required for property transactions, permits, and development applications. Work closely with architects, engineers, construction managers, and local government officials to confirm survey accuracy and resolve discrepancies. Present findings and recommendations, ensuring all relevant parties understand the technical information. Verify that all collected data meet established quality standards and comply with relevant legal and regulatory requirements. Maintain detailed field notes, sketches, and digital records to support project transparency and quality control.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Expertise in using advanced surveying tools and software (global positioning system, total stations, computer aided design, and geographic information system). High level of accuracy in data collection and documentation to ensure legal and technical precision. Competence in processing complex measurements and resolving data discrepancies. Ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and clearly present technical information in reports and presentations. Ready to work in outdoor conditions and adaptable to evolving technologies and methodologies in land surveying.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Surveying, Geomatics, Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related field. Must demonstrate progress toward or obtain licensure as a professional or licensed surveyor by passing the relevant examinations (e.g., Fundamentals of Surveying).
