State Economist

The State Economist is responsible for conducting complex economic analysis and providing expert advice on economic trends, forecasts, and policies that impact the state. This role involves gathering, analyzing, and interpreting economic data to assist in the development of state economic policies, reports, and legislative proposals. The State Economist will collaborate with other government agencies, research institutions, and external stakeholders to provide accurate and relevant economic insights that support decision-making processes at the state level.

Typical Functions:

Gather, analyze, and interpret data from various sources, including government reports, surveys, industry data, and economic indicators. Use statistical software and economic models to analyze trends in employment, wages, inflation, GDP, and other key economic metrics that influence state policy. Develop short-term and long-term economic forecasts to assess the state’s economic health, predict future trends, and identify potential challenges or opportunities. Provide economic projections related to employment, income, taxation, state revenue, and other fiscal matters. Identify emerging economic trends that may impact the state’s economy, such as changes in labor markets, trade, or technology. Prepare regular reports that analyze economic conditions and their potential effects on state budgets, revenues, and expenditures. Provide recommendations to state officials on fiscal policies, economic development strategies, and other policy matters based on thorough economic analysis. Analyze proposed legislation, tax policies, and regulatory changes to assess their potential economic impact on the state. Serve as an expert advisor to senior leadership, lawmakers, and other state agencies on economic matters, ensuring that policies are based on sound economic principles and evidence. Assist in the preparation of briefings, presentations, and reports for government officials and other stakeholders. Present complex economic data in ways that are understandable to non-experts, helping to inform public discourse on economic issues. Prepare comprehensive written reports, research papers, and presentations on key economic issues, with actionable insights for policymakers. Provide data-driven recommendations to enhance the state’s economic performance and address any emerging economic challenges.

Ability to analyze complex economic data, identify trends, and draw sound conclusions that inform policy recommendations. Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to apply economic theories and principles to real-world challenges. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain complex economic concepts to a wide range of audiences, including policymakers, stakeholders, and the general public. Ability to prepare clear, concise, and impactful reports and presentations based on economic research. Strong attention to detail in data analysis and report writing, ensuring accuracy and consistency in all work produced. Ability to recognize and address potential errors in data or analysis.

Minimum Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Public Policy, Finance, or a related field is required, plus five (5) years of professional experience in economic analysis, research, or a related field.
