Secretary of Corrections

The Secretary of Corrections is responsible for the overall management, direction, and administration of the Arkansas Department of Corrections. This role ensures that all correctional facilities and programs operate in compliance with state and federal laws while maintaining public safety and promoting offender rehabilitation and reintegration. The position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.

Special Job Requirements:

Typical Functions:

Develop and implement strategic plans, policies, and procedures for the Department of Corrections. Oversee the administration and operation of all correctional facilities and programs within the state. Ensure compliance with state and federal laws, regulations, and standards. Manage the department’s budget, financial resources, and personnel. Provide leadership and guidance to department staff, including hiring, training, evaluating performance, and making disciplinary decisions. Represent the department in meetings with government officials, community organizations, and other stakeholders. Collaborate with other state agencies, law enforcement, and community organizations to promote public safety and offender rehabilitation. Develop and implement initiatives to reduce recidivism and improve offender reintegration into society. Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of correctional programs and services. Prepare and present reports on the department’s activities, performance, and achievements. Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge of Policies and Procedures: Exceptional understanding of correctional practices and procedures. Human Resources: Knowledge of administrative and office management practices. Analytical Skills: Ability to analyze financial information and prepare detailed reports. In-depth knowledge of budgeting, financial management, and resource allocation. Understanding of human resource management principles and practices. Awareness of rehabilitation and reintegration programs for offenders.

Minimum Qualifications:

The formal education equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, public administration, business administration, or a related field. Ten years of experience in corrections, law enforcement, or a related field, including five years in a managerial or administrative role.
