Public Safety Supervisor/Expert
The Public Safety Supervisor/Expert oversees and coordinates public safety operations to ensure the effective delivery of emergency response, security, and law enforcement services. This position provides leadership, supervision, and training for public safety personnel while ensuring compliance with state laws, regulations, and departmental policies.

Typical Functions:
The assignment of supervisory duties is determined by the hiring agency’s operational needs. Non-supervisory roles will serve as senior technical experts. Direct, oversee, and evaluate the daily activities of public safety personnel, including dispatchers, officers, or security personnel. Conduct performance evaluations, provide coaching, and implement professional development plans. Supervise response efforts for emergencies, disasters, and public safety incidents. Ensure quick and appropriate coordination with law enforcement, fire, emergency medical services (EMS), and other agencies. Monitor and evaluate incident reports, ensuring accurate documentation and adherence to protocol. Act as the point of contact during crises, ensuring clear communication between field personnel and command staff. Ensure that department policies, state laws, and safety regulations are followed consistently. Conduct regular audits and inspections to identify areas for improvement in public safety operations. Investigate workplace incidents, complaints, or misconduct, recommending corrective actions as needed. Work collaboratively with government agencies, emergency responders, and community organizations to enhance public safety efforts. Utilize radio communication, computer-aided dispatch (CAD) systems, and reporting software for operational oversight. Maintain open communication with leadership, providing updates on security threats, staffing needs, and resource management.
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:
Strong ability to lead, motivate, and manage a team in high-pressure situations. Ability to make sound decisions quickly while prioritizing public safety. Excellent verbal and written communication skills for directing personnel and interacting with the public. Strong active listening skills and ability to diffuse tense or high-stress situations. Strong analytical skills to assess risks, threats, and operational needs. Ability to develop effective response plans and strategies for emergency situations. Familiarity with emergency response systems, radio communications, and security technology. Proficient in report writing, record-keeping, and data analysis related to public safety operations. Ability to handle high-pressure environments with composure and professionalism.
Minimum Qualifications:
At least three years of experience in public safety, law enforcement, emergency services, or a related field, including at least one year in a leadership capacity. Satisfaction of the minimum qualifications, including years of experience and service, does not entitle employees to automatic progression within the job series. Promotion to the next classification level is at the discretion of the department and the Office of Personnel Management, taking into consideration the employee’s demonstrated skills, competencies, performance, workload responsibilities, and organizational needs.
