Psychologist I

The Psychologist I provides professional psychological services within a state agency setting, conducting evaluations, assessments, treatment planning, and intervention for individuals in need of mental health services. This entry-level position involves administering psychological tests, diagnosing mental health conditions, and implementing treatment plans under the supervision of senior psychologists or program administrators.

Typical Functions:

Conduct psychological evaluations and diagnostic assessments for individuals receiving state services. Administer and interpret standardized psychological tests, cognitive assessments, and behavioral screenings. Develop comprehensive psychological reports with evidence-based findings and recommendations. Monitor and document behavioral and emotional progress over time. Develop and implement individualized treatment plans tailored to clients’ mental health needs. Provide individual and group therapy using evidence-based approaches. Utilize crisis intervention techniques to de-escalate situations and ensure client safety. Collaborate with psychiatrists, social workers, medical professionals, and caregivers to coordinate care. Maintain detailed clinical records in compliance with agency policies and ethical guidelines. Provide consultation and training for staff, families, and community partners on psychological issues and interventions. Ensure adherence to Arkansas mental health laws, professional ethical guidelines, and agency regulations.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Strong foundation in clinical psychology, psychopathology, and behavioral health treatment. Ability to administer and interpret psychological assessments. Proficiency in therapeutic interventions, including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), trauma-informed care, and crisis de-escalation. Ability to connect with and support clients in distress. Assess complex mental health needs and develop appropriate interventions. Manage caseloads efficiently while maintaining compliance with clinical documentation. Work effectively in high-pressure environments and respond to evolving client needs.

Minimum Qualifications:

Must possess a Doctoral degree in Psychology, Clinical Psychology, or a related field. Satisfaction of the minimum qualifications, including years of experience and service, does not entitle employees to automatic progression within the job series. Promotion to the next classification level is at the discretion of the department and the Office of Personnel Management, taking into consideration the employee’s demonstrated skills, competencies, performance, workload responsibilities, and organizational needs.

Required Certificates:

Must be licensed as a Psychologist in the State of Arkansas. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
