Professional Apprentice

Under the guidance of experienced professionals, the apprentice will develop specialized skills, knowledge, and competencies relevant to public administration, policy development, project management, and other core functions of government. This position offers an excellent opportunity for early-career individuals to work alongside professionals in a collaborative environment while contributing to the effectiveness and efficiency of state government operations. The Professional Apprentice will be assigned to a variety of projects and will have the opportunity to learn about government operations, policy analysis, and public service delivery.

Special Job Requirements:

Typical Functions:

Provide support in the execution of departmental projects, including researching policy issues, drafting reports, and helping prepare presentations. Assist with the planning, coordination, and implementation of public service programs and community outreach initiatives. Provide administrative assistance by maintaining accurate records, scheduling meetings, preparing documentation, and assisting with internal communications. Assist with document preparation, including reports, memos, and correspondence for internal and external stakeholders. Perform other general office duties, including answering phone calls, responding to inquiries, and providing customer service support when needed. Build relationships with colleagues, mentors, and other professionals within the department and across the state government network. Seek and incorporate feedback from supervisors and colleagues to enhance job performance and professional growth.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Basic understanding of state government structure, public administration, and policy-making processes. Familiarity with office procedures, project management practices, and administrative functions. Knowledge of research methods, data collection, and analysis techniques is beneficial. Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare professional reports, deliver presentations, and interact effectively with others. Excellent organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and basic knowledge of data analysis tools. Ability to learn quickly and apply new skills in a government environment. Ability to work independently and as part of a team, maintaining professionalism and contributing to group efforts.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in public administration, political science, business administration, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience. One to two years of experience required, but previous internship, volunteer work, or coursework in public service, community outreach, or government functions is preferred.
