Printer Supervisor

The Printer Supervisor is responsible for overseeing and managing the daily operations of the state government printing department. This includes supervising a team of printers and other staff, ensuring efficient operation of all printing equipment, and maintaining high-quality standards for printed materials. The Printer Supervisor will be responsible for allocating resources, managing workflows, ensuring maintenance of printing machinery, and providing guidance to staff members.

Typical Functions:

The assignment of supervisory duties is determined by the hiring agency’s operational needs. Non-supervisory roles will serve as senior technical experts. Supervise and lead a team of printers and support staff, ensuring that all team members are effectively trained, supported, and meet departmental goals. Allocate tasks based on urgency and priority, ensuring that printing jobs are completed within the required deadlines. Monitor staff performance, provide ongoing feedback, and conduct performance evaluations. Offer coaching and mentoring to encourage continuous skill development and ensure high levels of productivity. Schedule shifts and manage staffing levels to maintain consistent operations while considering workload fluctuations. Oversee and ensure the efficient operation of all printing equipment, including high-speed digital printers, offset presses, and finishing machinery. Ensure that job specifications, such as paper size, ink color, and print quality, are followed precisely to meet department and client expectations. Troubleshoot and resolve technical problems with printing machines, coordinating with maintenance teams for repairs as needed. Maintain a high standard of quality control, inspecting print runs for accuracy, color consistency, and adherence to job requirements. Ensure all print jobs are completed efficiently, including meeting deadlines and handling unexpected production challenges. Plan, coordinate, and prioritize print jobs across multiple departments or teams, ensuring timely completion of all print requests. Manage and optimize workflow processes to maximize efficiency while maintaining quality standards. Track job progress, ensure proper documentation of job specifications, and provide updates to relevant stakeholders on job status and completion. Review and adjust scheduling to accommodate last-minute print jobs or changes in priority. Maintain accurate records of print jobs, including specifications, quantities, costs, and timelines, for accountability and reporting purposes. Provide regular reports to management on job progress, equipment maintenance, staffing, and departmental performance metrics.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Advanced knowledge of printing technology, including digital and offset printing equipment, finishing tools, and other related machinery. Ability to troubleshoot and resolve equipment issues promptly to minimize downtime. Strong understanding of printing techniques, job specifications, and quality control processes. Proficiency in print management software and the ability to implement job tracking and inventory management systems. Excellent organizational skills to manage multiple tasks and ensure deadlines are met. Ability to perform thorough quality checks during the printing process, identifying defects and making necessary adjustments. Knowledge of color matching, document formatting, and other critical factors in print quality.

Minimum Qualifications:

A high school diploma is required, plus three (3) years of experience in a printing or production environment. Satisfaction of the minimum qualifications, including years of experience and service, does not entitle employees to automatic progression within the job series. Promotion to the next classification level is at the discretion of the department and the Office of Personnel Management, taking into consideration the employee’s demonstrated skills, competencies, performance, workload responsibilities, and organizational needs.
