Physician Supervisor/Expert

The Physician Supervisor/Expert is a leadership position within a state government agency responsible for providing expert-level medical care, overseeing medical operations, and supervising a team of healthcare professionals. This position is designed for an experienced physician with advanced clinical expertise who is dedicated to improving the health outcomes of the population through high-quality patient care and leadership in medical practices. Typical Functions:

The assignment of supervisory duties is determined by the hiring agency’s operational needs. Non-supervisory roles will serve as senior technical experts. Provide comprehensive medical care, diagnosing and treating a wide range of medical conditions in patients of all ages. Develop and implement individualized treatment plans, monitor patient progress, and adjust therapies as needed. Serve as a medical consultant for patients, healthcare providers, and state officials on general medical conditions and complex cases. Provide second opinions and offer guidance on treatment options, including preventive care, chronic disease management, and urgent care. Perform general medical procedures and examinations, ensuring high standards of care. Oversee clinical procedures and ensure they align with state health guidelines and professional standards. Supervise and mentor a multidisciplinary medical team, including physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals. Provide leadership, guidance, and support to staff, ensuring they adhere to best practices, quality standards, and ethical guidelines. Monitor and evaluate the performance of medical staff, providing constructive feedback and fostering a culture of continuous improvement. Conduct performance reviews and recommend professional development opportunities for team members. Ensure that patient records are accurately and comprehensively documented in accordance with state and federal regulations. Maintain up-to-date medical histories, diagnoses, treatment plans, and progress notes for all patients under care.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

High-level clinical skills in diagnosing, treating, and managing a wide range of medical conditions, including preventive care and chronic disease management. Expertise in medical procedures relevant to the general practice of medicine, with a focus on patient safety and quality of care. Proven ability to lead, supervise, and manage a diverse healthcare team, including mentoring and supporting medical professionals. Strong decision-making and problem-solving abilities, particularly in clinical and high-pressure situations. Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex medical concepts clearly to patients, families, and colleagues. Strong interpersonal skills, capable of building rapport with patients and healthcare team members. Exceptional analytical skills, with the ability to assess patient needs, make informed decisions, and provide evidence-based solutions. Critical thinking abilities to diagnose complex medical conditions and design effective treatment plans.

Minimum Qualifications:

Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) degree from an accredited medical school, plus five (5) years of professional experience in a clinical or specialized setting Satisfaction of the minimum qualifications, including years of experience and service, does not entitle employees to automatic progression within the job series. Promotion to the next classification level is at the discretion of the department and the Office of Personnel Management, taking into consideration the employee’s demonstrated skills, competencies, performance, workload responsibilities, and organizational needs.

Required Certificates:

Must hold an active and unrestricted physician license issued by the Arkansas State Medical Board. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
