Park Administrator

The Park Administrator is responsible for the overall management, operations, and strategic direction of a state park, ensuring its environmental conservation, visitor experience, and financial sustainability. This role oversees staff supervision, budgeting, maintenance, programming, and regulatory compliance while fostering public engagement and protecting natural and cultural resources.

Typical Functions:

Oversee the daily operations of the state park, ensuring compliance with state regulations, safety protocols, and conservation policies. Develop and implement park management plans, facility maintenance schedules, and resource conservation strategies. Manage budgets, revenue generation, and financial reporting, including entrance fees, permits, and concession agreements. Ensure the park meets accessibility, environmental, and visitor service standards. Supervise and direct park staff, rangers, seasonal employees, and volunteers, ensuring a well-trained and motivated workforce. Establish staff schedules, training programs, and performance evaluations to promote efficiency and professional growth. Supervises staff by interviewing, recommending staff for hire/fire, assigning and reviewing work, counseling, and evaluating the performance of incumbents. Oversee educational programs, guided tours, and recreational activities to enhance visitor engagement. Address visitor inquiries, complaints, and emergencies with professionalism and efficiency. Ensure protection and preservation of natural habitats, historical landmarks, and recreational areas. Work with state and federal agencies on conservation projects, land management, and habitat restoration. Monitor wildlife, water quality, and vegetation management in accordance with environmental policies. Implement sustainability initiatives, including waste reduction, recycling, and eco-friendly practices. Enforce safety policies, park regulations, and emergency response procedures. Conduct facility inspections, risk assessments, and security monitoring to maintain a safe environment. Work with law enforcement, emergency responders, and search-and-rescue teams as needed.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Strong decision-making and problem-solving abilities in a dynamic outdoor setting. Ability to supervise a large staff. Experience in budgeting, strategic planning, and operational oversight. Excellent written and verbal communication skills for engaging with the public, media, and stakeholders. Ability to deliver presentations, prepare reports, and coordinate outreach programs. Strong customer service and conflict resolution skills when dealing with visitors and public concerns. Proficiency in budget management, procurement, and record-keeping. Ability to interpret and enforce state laws, park regulations, and conservation policies. Knowledge of natural resource management, land conservation, and recreational planning. Familiarity with facility maintenance, trail development, and park infrastructure. Proficiency in GIS mapping, environmental monitoring, and data analysis preferred. Basic skills in first aid, CPR, and emergency preparedness. Directs the activities of a large multi-disciplinary professional and technical staff through subordinate supervisors. Directs research, surveys, and feasibility studies analyzing state park system needs, and reviews, revises, and/or prepares state park plans. Presents and disseminates information on section activities to the Legislative Council, Commissioners, and other state and federal agencies. Develops, procures, and utilizes all possible fund sources for capital improvement projects including state appropriations, state, federal, and private grants, gifts, and foundations. Reviews appropriations regularly to ensure the availability of funds and approves expenses. Suggests or drafts proposed legislation in support of section goals and evaluates impact on section plans and operations.

Minimum Qualifications:

At least three years of experience in park management, natural resource conservation, recreation administration, or a related field, including two years in a leadership capacity.
