Medical Board Director

The Medical Board Director serves as the executive administrator for the Arkansas State Medical Board (ASMB), overseeing the day-to-day operations of the agency and ensuring the effective execution of the Board's mission to protect public health and safety through the licensure and regulation of medical professionals. This position is responsible for the strategic, regulatory, administrative, and fiscal management of the Board and serves as a liaison between the Board, licensees, stakeholders, and the public.

Special Job Requirements:

Typical Functions:

Oversee and direct all operations of the Arkansas State Medical Board, including licensure, regulation, investigations, compliance, enforcement, public communication, and policy development. Manage and supervise administrative, legal, investigative, and licensing staff to ensure the efficient and lawful execution of board functions. Implement and enforce all state laws, board rules, and procedures governing medical practice and licensure in Arkansas. Facilitate all aspects of medical and allied health professional licensing, including application review, credential verification, and approval processes. Coordinate and support board and committee meetings, including agenda development, recordkeeping, policy updates, and regulatory decision-making. Monitor and respond to legislative and regulatory developments; coordinate the drafting and submission of rules and legislative proposals on behalf of the board. Direct and oversee investigations of complaints and violations; work closely with legal counsel and enforcement staff to prepare disciplinary cases. Develop, manage, and monitor the agency’s annual budget, ensuring fiscal responsibility in compliance with state financial procedures. Serve as the public spokesperson for the Board, providing accurate information, reports, and data to the public, legislature, and stakeholders. Ensure proper documentation and maintenance of all official board records, including meeting minutes, licensure records, and legal files.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

In-depth knowledge of Arkansas medical practice laws, healthcare regulation, and administrative procedures. Strong understanding of public sector licensure systems, compliance enforcement, and disciplinary processes. Experience in managing complex regulatory programs and navigating legal and legislative frameworks. Proficiency in budgeting, financial oversight, and strategic planning in a government or regulatory setting. Familiarity with open records laws, public meeting requirements, and regulatory databases.

Minimum Qualifications:

A high school diploma is required. A bachelor’s degree in public health, health services administration, public policy, social work, or a related field, plus 5 years of experience in public health, healthcare management, medical board administration, or community based program administration is required.
