Managing Geologist

The Managing Geologist is a seasoned expert responsible for overseeing the execution of geological investigations and mapping projects. Typical Functions:

Develop and manage geological projects from planning through execution, ensuring that all phases meet technical, regulatory, and quality standards. Oversee field data collection efforts, laboratory testing, and geological mapping initiatives. Review and interpret geological data, ensuring that conclusions are accurate and actionable for resource evaluation, hazard assessments, or infrastructure planning. Supervise and mentor teams of geologists and field technicians, ensuring continuous professional development and adherence to best practices. Allocate work, set project goals, and conduct performance reviews while fostering a collaborative work environment. Provide technical guidance for complex analyses and decision-making during high-stakes projects. Serve as the primary geological consultant for internal teams and external clients, translating technical data into understandable insights. Prepare detailed reports, presentations, and technical documentation to communicate project findings and strategic recommendations. Maintain strong relationships with regulatory bodies, clients, and business units to ensure transparent communication regarding geological risks and opportunities. Ensure all geological investigations comply with industry regulations, safety standards, and data quality requirements. Lead internal quality reviews and manage external audits related to geoscience activities. Remain updated on emerging geological trends, technologies, and regulatory changes to continually improve project methodologies. Identify opportunities to integrate new technologies, methodologies, and research findings into geological practices. Drive initiatives that enhance data accuracy, reduce project timelines, and optimize resource management.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Deep understanding of geological principles, field methods, and advanced data analysis techniques. Proficient with modern geological software (e.g., geographic information system, remote sensing tools) and laboratory testing methodologies. Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary teams, manage project budgets, and oversee project timelines. Strong decision-making skills paired with the capability to mentor and develop geologists. Exceptional analytical skills to interpret complex geological data and provide actionable recommendations. Adept at troubleshooting project challenges and implementing effective, innovative solutions. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, capable of translating highly technical content for varied audiences. Experience preparing detailed technical reports, proposals, and presentations for both internal and external personnel. Thorough understanding of relevant environmental, safety, and regulatory standards governing geological operations. Proactive in ensuring projects meet all applicable compliance requirements while maintaining a focus on continuous improvement.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Earth Science, Environmental Science, or a related discipline. Minimum of 8 years of progressive experience in geological investigations, including significant hands-on fieldwork and laboratory analysis. Demonstrated experience in managing or leading geological projects, preferably with supervisory or team leadership responsibilities. Professional licensure as a Professional Geologist may be required depending on the region.
