Licensed Associate Counselor
The Licensed Associate Counselor (LAC) provides supervised professional mental health counseling to individuals, families, and groups to support emotional wellness, behavior modification, and psychological resilience. Under the clinical supervision of a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) or other approved supervisor, the LAC engages in assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, and delivery of therapeutic interventions aligned with state and ethical guidelines.

Special Job Requirements:
Typical Functions:
Conduct client intake assessments under supervision, including psychosocial histories and clinical interviews. Participate in the development and implementation of individualized treatment plans tailored to each client’s unique needs. Deliver evidence-informed counseling services to individuals, families, or groups in accordance with scope of practice. Collaborate with supervisors and multidisciplinary teams to monitor treatment progress and outcomes. Document services, treatment plans, and progress notes accurately and in a timely manner according to agency and HIPAA requirements. Assist in crisis intervention, safety planning, and triage support under supervision. Participate in case reviews, staff meetings, and clinical supervision sessions to enhance service quality and professional development. Educate clients and families about mental health, available resources, and behavioral strategies to support recovery and wellness. Refer clients to additional services or community resources as appropriate.
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:
Knowledge of basic mental health principles, counseling methods, and behavior modification techniques. Knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations, as well as crisis response and suicide prevention techniques. Ability to conduct interviews and assessments, keep accurate and detailed records, and manage emotionally dysregulated clients. Ability to communicate effectively with diverse communities, develop and coordinate individualized service plans for case records, and make sound decisions in high-stress situations. Skilled in time management, organization, and problem solving.
Minimum Qualifications:
At least one year of experience in a clinical, educational, correctional, or community health setting. Satisfaction of the minimum qualifications, including years of experience and service, does not entitle employees to automatic progression within the job series. Promotion to the next classification level is at the discretion of the department and the Office of Personnel Management, taking into consideration the employee’s demonstrated skills, competencies, performance, workload responsibilities, and organizational needs.
Required Certificates:
Must be a Licensed Associate Counselor in the State of Arkansas. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
