Laboratory Technician III
The Laboratory Technician III serves as the senior-level technician responsible for conducting complex laboratory tests and analyses, supporting laboratory scientists, maintaining instruments, and providing technical guidance to junior technicians. This position ensures all laboratory procedures are executed with precision, safety, and in compliance with state and federal regulations.

Typical Functions:
Perform advanced chemical, biological, environmental, or forensic tests on a variety of samples using complex instruments and methodologies. Interpret and validate testing data to ensure accuracy, consistency, and compliance with laboratory protocols. Prepare reagents, solutions, and specimens according to detailed protocols. Operate, calibrate, and maintain advanced laboratory instruments such as spectrophotometers, gas chromatographs, PCR analyzers, or mass spectrometers. Maintain detailed equipment logs, calibration records, and service histories. Assist in internal audits, corrective action processes, and documentation related to regulatory compliance. Maintain accurate records and chain of custody documentation when applicable. Provide technical support and on-the-job training to junior Laboratory Technicians. Review work performed by other technicians for completeness and adherence to protocols. Participate in the development and revision of SOPs and test procedures in collaboration with Laboratory Scientists or Supervisors.
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:
Consistently produces accurate and thorough test results and documentation. Applies sound judgment when troubleshooting or interpreting complex data. Efficiently prioritizes tasks to meet deadlines under minimal supervision. Clearly communicates technical information to colleagues, supervisors, and support staff.
Minimum Qualifications:
At least three years of experience in laboratory science, or a related field. Satisfaction of the minimum qualifications, including years of experience and service, does not entitle employees to automatic progression within the job series. Promotion to the next classification level is at the discretion of the department and the Office of Personnel Management, taking into consideration the employee’s demonstrated skills, competencies, performance, workload responsibilities, and organizational needs.
