Laboratory Manager

The Laboratory Manager is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of a state-run laboratory facility. This role ensures timely, accurate, and compliant laboratory services by supervising personnel, managing workflows, maintaining equipment, and supporting quality assurance programs.

Typical Functions:

Manage daily laboratory functions including sample processing, testing, recordkeeping, and reporting. Oversee multiple supervisors while handling regulatory programs, quality, or operations management. Ensure compliance with regulatory standards applicable to laboratory type. Coordinate workflow and scheduling to meet service demand and turnaround times. Supervise laboratory technologists, analysts, and support staff, providing leadership, coaching, and performance evaluations. Monitor and enforce safety and procedural compliance in accordance with state policies and OSHA standards. Oversee quality control processes, including proficiency testing, instrument calibration, and documentation audits. Collaborate with staff to maintain accreditation and certification standards. Identify and resolve technical issues that affect data integrity, accuracy, or timeliness. Manage laboratory supply inventory and procure necessary materials and equipment in line with state procurement rules. Monitor budgets, track expenditures, and contribute to cost-effective planning. Serve as liaison between laboratory staff and agency leadership to provide updates, analysis, and technical support. Prepare operational reports, metrics dashboards, and compliance documentation for audits or reviews.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Ability to lead technical teams with clarity, purpose, and accountability. Skilled in conveying technical information to diverse audiences including non-scientific stakeholders. Proactive in identifying operational challenges and applying data-driven solutions. Maintains high standards of accuracy and completeness in all lab functions. Can adjust processes and priorities in response to regulatory updates or urgent needs. Builds productive working relationships with internal and external partners. Effectively prioritizes tasks to meet deadlines under pressure.

Minimum Qualifications:

At least five years of experience in laboratory science, or a related field, including two years in a leadership capacity.
