Laboratory Director

The Laboratory Director is a senior leadership position responsible for overseeing all administrative, scientific, regulatory, and operational functions of a state-operated laboratory. This role ensures the delivery of accurate, timely, and high-quality laboratory services in support of public health, forensic science, environmental monitoring, or regulatory compliance.

Typical Functions:

Direct all aspects of laboratory operations including testing, research, compliance, safety, and quality control. Develop and implement long-term strategic plans, objectives, and policies to support state agency missions. Lead laboratory accreditation efforts and ensure compliance with state, federal, and agency-specific regulatory standards (e.g., CLIA, ISO, EPA, ASCLD/LAB). Supervise scientific, technical, and administrative staff, including senior scientists, analysts, and quality personnel. Prepare and manage laboratory budgets, contracts, and grants in compliance with state procurement policies. Ensure efficient allocation and use of resources, including laboratory equipment, facilities, and personnel. Direct internal quality assurance and proficiency testing programs to maintain accuracy and reliability of test results. Ensure timely and accurate reporting of laboratory findings to stakeholders including state agencies, law enforcement, or public health officials. Serve as the laboratory’s point of contact for audits, inspections, and reviews conducted by regulatory or accrediting bodies. Act as a liaison between the laboratory and external partners, including federal agencies, law enforcement, healthcare providers, and the public. Represent the agency at interagency meetings, legislative sessions, conferences, and advisory committees. Provide subject-matter expertise and interpret laboratory data for policymakers and executive leadership.

Minimum Qualifications:

At least six years of experience in laboratory science, or a related field, including four years in a leadership capacity. Must have at least four years of experience leading and managing a multi-disciplinary workforce, demonstrating strong leadership, collaboration, and strategic oversight in a dynamic environment. May require a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA)-accredited institution, or possess an equivalent doctoral degree in veterinary medicine, physical sciences, or life sciences.
