Labor Mediator
The Labor Mediator is a neutral, third-party professional who facilitates the resolution of disputes between labor representatives and management. By using advanced negotiation, conflict resolution, and mediation techniques, the Labor Mediator helps parties reach mutually acceptable agreements, thereby reducing the likelihood of prolonged disputes or litigation. This role is essential for maintaining agreeable and harmonious labor relations, ensuring compliance with applicable labor laws, and promoting workplace stability.

Typical Functions:
Conduct structured mediation sessions between labor and management representatives to clarify issues in dispute and work toward consensus. Guide parties through negotiation and discussion, ensuring each side is heard and that all relevant concerns are addressed. Identify the core issues and underlying interests of the disputing parties. Propose creative, win-win solutions that address the needs of both labor and management. Prepare detailed reports summarizing the mediation process, proposals discussed, agreements reached, and any follow-up actions required. Maintain accurate records of all mediation sessions while ensuring confidentiality and compliance with legal standards. Serve as an impartial facilitator while building trust with all parties. Advise participants on the implications of proposed resolutions, while reinforcing a cooperative approach to problem-solving. Stay updated on changes in labor laws, collective bargaining practices, and dispute resolution techniques. Attend relevant workshops, seminars, or certification programs to enhance mediation skills and industry knowledge.

Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to facilitate discussions, manage conflict, and foster cooperative problem-solving. Ability to remain neutral and objective, ensuring that all parties feel dispassionately represented and respected. Superior verbal and written communication skills are necessary to articulate complex issues and document mediation outcomes clearly. Strong analytical skills to assess dispute dynamics, identify underlying issues, and propose effective resolutions. A solid understanding of labor laws, collective bargaining agreements, and workplace regulations to inform mediation practices. High emotional intelligence to empathize with disputing parties and manage high-pressure or sensitive situations adeptly. Ability to maintain composure, neutrality, and a solution-focused mindset during intense negotiations.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Labor Relations, Industrial Relations, Conflict Resolution, Mediation, Business Administration, Psychology, or a related discipline. Minimum of 4 years of relevant experience in labor relations, dispute resolution, human resources, or a related field. Experience in negotiating collective bargaining agreements, managing labor disputes, or conducting mediation sessions may be required. Experience participating in or facilitating conflict resolution processes in a workplace setting may be required. Experience working with labor unions or corporate management, or in roles related to alternative dispute resolution may be required. Satisfaction of the minimum qualifications, including years of experience and service, does not entitle employees to automatic progression within the job series. Promotion to the next classification level is at the discretion of the department and the Office of Personnel Management, taking into consideration the employee’s demonstrated skills, competencies, performance, workload responsibilities, and organizational needs.
