IT Infrastructure Engineer

The IT Infrastructure Engineer is a critical role within the state responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining the state's IT infrastructure systems. This includes managing hardware, networks, software, and cloud-based solutions to ensure the stability, scalability, and security of the state's IT environment. The IT Infrastructure Engineer will collaborate with other IT professionals, departments, and external vendors to support the state's technology initiatives and ensure seamless integration of infrastructure systems.

Typical Functions:

Design, configure, and implement IT infrastructure solutions, including networks, servers, storage, and cloud platforms, to meet the state’s technological requirements. Ensure that all systems are scalable, reliable, and cost-effective. Manage and maintain the state’s IT infrastructure, including hardware, software, and network systems. Perform regular updates, patches, and system monitoring to ensure smooth and continuous operation of state IT systems. Oversee the state’s network infrastructure, including local area networks (LAN), wide area networks (WAN), and cloud-based networks. Troubleshoot and resolve network-related issues, ensuring high availability and optimal performance. Support the state’s cloud infrastructure, including cloud services (AWS, Azure, or others), ensuring that cloud resources are properly provisioned, configured, and maintained to meet operational requirements. Assist with the migration of services from on-premises infrastructure to cloud environments when necessary. Implement and enforce security best practices for infrastructure systems. Monitor infrastructure for security vulnerabilities and respond to threats or breaches. Ensure compliance with relevant security regulations and frameworks, such as FISMA, HIPAA, or other applicable state/federal standards. Implement and maintain backup and disaster recovery plans for the state’s IT infrastructure. Regularly test systems to ensure they can recover quickly in the event of an outage or data loss. Monitor infrastructure performance and identify opportunities for optimization. Ensure that all systems are running at peak performance by proactively addressing issues related to system reliability, response time, and resource utilization. Work with other IT teams, departments, and external vendors to ensure that infrastructure solutions meet the needs of various state agencies. Provide technical support for infrastructure-related issues, resolving problems quickly and effectively. Maintain detailed and accurate documentation of all infrastructure configurations, changes, and system architectures. Prepare regular reports on system performance, issues, and resolutions for senior management.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Strong knowledge of IT infrastructure components, including servers, storage, networks, and cloud services. Proficient in infrastructure-related software, hardware, and protocols such as VMware, Microsoft Active Directory, DNS, TCP/IP, firewalls, and network security. Excellent analytical skills with the ability to identify, troubleshoot, and resolve technical issues related to infrastructure systems. In-depth experience in network management, system administration, and supporting large-scale IT infrastructure environments. Familiarity with both on-premises and cloud-based infrastructure solutions. Able to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and work effectively in team settings. Knowledge of IT security best practices and experience in securing IT systems and networks. Ability to implement security policies and monitor for security threats.

Minimum Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Network Engineering, or a related field is required, plus six (6) years of experience in IT infrastructure management and systems administration.
