Health Educator

The Health Educator is responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating health education programs aimed at promoting wellness and preventing disease within the state of Arkansas. This position involves providing information, resources, and guidance to individuals and communities to improve health behaviors, increase health literacy, and reduce the prevalence of preventable diseases. The Health Educator works to improve public health through community outreach, educational campaigns, and the development of evidence-based health promotion strategies.

Typical Functions:

Design, implement, and evaluate health education programs for various populations, including schools, workplaces, community centers, and healthcare facilities. Develop culturally relevant materials that promote healthy lifestyle choices and disease prevention strategies. Engage with diverse community groups to identify health education needs and provide tailored programs that address specific health challenges, such as tobacco use, physical inactivity, obesity, and chronic disease prevention. Foster partnerships with local organizations to improve community health. Plan and execute public health campaigns and initiatives to raise awareness about key health issues. This includes the distribution of educational materials, social media outreach, and hosting health fairs or other public events to promote wellness. Promote health literacy by educating individuals and communities on how to access and interpret health information. Empower residents to make informed decisions about their health and navigate the healthcare system effectively. Provide education on chronic disease prevention and health management strategies, including nutrition, physical activity, mental health, and substance abuse prevention. Work with individuals to identify risk factors and help them adopt healthier behaviors. Collect and analyze data on health education initiatives to assess their effectiveness. Use data to modify programs, enhance their impact, and report on outcomes to relevant stakeholders. Provide individual counseling to community members on lifestyle changes, including smoking cessation, weight management, stress management, and increasing physical activity. Offer resources and support to help individuals make lasting health changes.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present complex health information in a clear and engaging manner. Comfort in speaking to groups, creating educational content, and using media outlets to reach diverse populations. Ability to build rapport and trust with individuals and community groups from various backgrounds. Skilled in motivating individuals to adopt healthy behaviors and engage in health education programs. Awareness of and sensitivity to the diverse cultural, socioeconomic, and health needs of Arkansas’s population. Ability to develop and deliver health education programs that are culturally relevant and address health disparities. Strong organizational skills to manage multiple health education projects, track progress, and meet deadlines. Ability to plan and execute outreach events, workshops, and training sessions. Deep understanding of behavior change theory and techniques to help individuals modify unhealthy habits and make sustainable lifestyle improvements. Knowledge of motivational interviewing and other counseling techniques is a plus. Ability to assess the needs of communities and evaluate the effectiveness of health education programs. Skilled in using data to improve program design and measure the impact of initiatives. Comfortable presenting health information to diverse groups, including students, professionals, and the general public. Experience delivering workshops, training sessions, and public talks on health topics.

Minimum Qualifications:

A bachelor’s degree in public health, health education, community health, or a related field is required. Satisfaction of the minimum qualifications, including years of experience and service, does not entitle employees to automatic progression within the job series. Promotion to the next classification level is at the discretion of the department and the Office of Personnel Management, taking into consideration the employee’s demonstrated skills, competencies, performance, workload responsibilities, and organizational needs.
