Typical Functions:

The assignment of supervisory duties is determined by the hiring agency’s operational needs. Non-supervisory roles will serve as senior technical experts. Plan and execute comprehensive field studies to assess geological structures, stratifications, mineral deposits, and potential geohazards. Utilize state-of-the-art instruments-such as global positioning systems, light detection and ranging, and geophysical sensors-to collect high-quality data. Oversee detailed mapping and recording of geological features, ensuring accurate data capture for subsequent analysis. Perform advanced laboratory tests (petrographic, geochemical, and isotopic analyses) to determine the composition and properties of geological materials. Employ geographic information system, remote sensing, and modeling software to develop detailed geological maps and predictive models. Validate data through meticulous cross-checking and apply analytical techniques to extract actionable insights. Lead multidisciplinary projects by developing project plans, budgets, and timelines for geological assessments. Provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior geologists and field teams, enhancing overall team expertise. Work collaboratively with engineers, environmental scientists, and regulatory specialists to integrate geological data into broader project frameworks. Ensure all geological investigations adhere to local, state, and federal regulations, as well as industry best practices. Prepare and present comprehensive technical reports, translating complex geological data into clear insights for both technical and non-technical audiences. Act as a subject matter expert during consultations with regulatory bodies, clients, and a variety of assorted personnel. Stay current with emerging research, technologies, and methodologies in geoscience, integrating new techniques into practice. Engage in research projects, potentially contributing to peer-reviewed publications and industry conferences to arrange the agency at the forefront of geological innovation.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Advanced proficiency in geological field methods, laboratory testing, and data integration tools (geographic information system, remote sensing, modeling software). Exceptional analytical skills to evaluate complex geological data and synthesize findings into actionable insights. Strong written and verbal communication skills to produce detailed reports and articulate findings clearly to varied audiences. Proven experience in leading projects, mentoring teams, and managing cross-disciplinary collaborations. Capacity to integrate new research, emerging technologies, and innovative methodologies into practice.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Earth Science, Environmental Science, or a related field. Minimum of 6 years of progressively responsible experience in geological investigations, with a strong record of hands-on fieldwork, laboratory analysis, and technical reporting. Professional licensure as a Professional Geologist may be required depending on the region. Satisfaction of the minimum qualifications, including years of experience and service, does not entitle employees to automatic progression within the job series. Promotion to the next classification level is at the discretion of the department and the Office of Personnel Management, taking into consideration the employee’s demonstrated skills, competencies, performance, workload responsibilities, and organizational needs.
