Forest Ranger II
The Forest Ranger II is responsible for performing advanced forestry operations, including wildfire prevention and suppression, conservation efforts, and public education related to Arkansas's forestlands. This position requires hands-on fieldwork, operation of specialized equipment, and collaboration with emergency responders to protect and manage state forests.

Typical Functions:
Respond to and suppress wildfires using specialized firefighting techniques and equipment. Conduct controlled burns and firebreak maintenance to mitigate fire risks. Operate and maintain fire suppression tools, including bulldozers, transport vehicles, pickup trucks, ATV/UTV, chainsaws, and water pumps. Assist in investigating wildfire causes and enforce fire-related state laws. Collects and compiles forest management data such as timber inventories and tree seedling checks. Participate in reforestation projects, timber stand improvement, and habitat restoration efforts. Assists with identifying and addressing forest health concerns, such as pests, diseases, and invasive species. Conduct inspections of logging operations to ensure compliance with state laws and sustainable forestry practices. Educate landowners, schools, and outdoor enthusiasts on wildfire prevention and responsible land stewardship. Enforce Arkansas forestry laws, fire bans, and timber regulations. Investigate reports of illegal logging, arson, and environmental violations. Assist in statewide emergency response efforts related to wildfires, natural disasters, and public safety incidents. Coordinate with state and federal agencies in fire suppression and disaster mitigation. Serve on incident management teams for large-scale emergency operations. Job duties may involve exposure to extreme weather conditions, rough terrain, and potentially hazardous and/or dangerous conditions. May be required to work under extended subject-to-call status and extended work hours.
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:
Knowledge of wildfire behavior, suppression tactics, and controlled burns. Proficiency in operating forestry equipment such as bulldozers, chainsaws, and firefighting vehicles. Familiarity with Arkansas forestry laws, conservation principles, and land management practices. Ability to use GPS mapping and conduct land surveys for fire prevention and conservation planning. Quick decision-making skills in emergency and high-pressure situations. Strong ability to assess and respond to dynamic wildfire conditions. Critical thinking for evaluating conservation strategies and land-use planning. Ability to communicate effectively with emergency personnel, landowners, and the public. Conflict resolution skills to de-escalate tense situations when enforcing state laws. Ability to work as part of a coordinated firefighting and land management team. Willingness to lead seasonal or entry-level rangers in training and field operations. Familiarity with computer programs such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Ability to assist with fire investigations.
Minimum Qualifications:
At least three years of experience as a Forest Ranger I and successful completion of all Forest Ranger I and II training and skills demonstrations. Must reside within the assigned area and pass an annual physical standard as a condition of employment. Satisfaction of the minimum qualifications, including years of experience and service, does not entitle employees to automatic progression within the job series. Promotion to the next classification level is at the discretion of the department and the Office of Personnel Management, taking into consideration the employee’s demonstrated skills, competencies, performance, workload responsibilities, and organizational needs.
Required Certificates:
Must possess NWCG Firefighter Type 2 Certification within 6 months of hire. Must possess a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
