Firing Range Supervisor / Expert

The Firing Range Supervisor / Expert is a seasoned professional responsible for overseeing all aspects of firing range operations, safety enforcement, and facility maintenance. This role involves managing daily range activities, ensuring strict adherence to firearm safety protocols, and providing expert instruction and technical support to both range patrons and inexpert personnel. The supervisor / expert plays a key role in maintaining the integrity of the range environment by performing preventative equipment maintenance, managing inventory, and upholding regulatory and safety standards required by both government and industry regulations.

Typical Functions:

The assignment of supervisory duties is determined by the hiring agency’s operational needs. Non-supervisory roles will serve as senior technical experts. Supervise daily firing range activities, conducting routine inspections to confirm that safety procedures are strictly followed by all range users. Develop and enforce operational guidelines to ensure a safe and efficient shooting environment. Schedule and coordinate range events, educational sessions, and training classes for personnel and civilian shooting groups. Enforce firearms safety protocols and regulatory guidelines in compliance with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, local laws, and industry best practices. Conduct regular safety drills and briefing sessions to educate patrons on safe firearm handling and emergency procedures. Monitor range behavior to immediately address any safety infractions or equipment hazards. Oversee the maintenance, calibration, and repair of range equipment-including target systems, sound attenuation devices, and other mechanical or electronic systems. Troubleshoot minor technical issues and coordinate with vendors or technical experts for more complex repairs. Manage and maintain an inventory of firearms supplies, ammunition, cleaning materials, and other operational necessities. Provide expert training and on-the-job instruction to existing personnel and new range personnel on proper firearm handling, range protocols, and emergency response procedures. Develop and update training materials and safety manuals based on evolving industry standards and regulatory changes. Serve as a mentor and subject matter expert in range operations and safety. Prepare detailed reports on range usage, incident reports, and maintenance schedules. Maintain accurate record-keeping for equipment inspections, repairs, and compliance audits. Collaborate with management on budgeting, resource allocation, and planning improvements for facility operations.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Deep commitment to maintaining stringent safety standards and the ability to quickly identify and resolve safety issues. Strong mechanical aptitude and comfort using hand tools, digital equipment, and range management software. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to deliver clear instructions and safety briefings. Capability to train, mentor, and motivate both peers and subordinates. High level of accuracy in maintaining records, performing inspections, and ensuring compliance with safety regulations. Creative, resourceful, and calm under pressure, especially in emergency or unexpected situations. Ability to perform physically demanding tasks such as lifting (up to 50 pounds routinely, occasionally more) and standing for extended periods.

Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma or GED. Minimum of 6 years of relevant experience in firing range operations, firearm maintenance, or related roles. This experience should demonstrate a strong background in enforcing safety standards, equipment management, and operational oversight. Proven track record of conducting firearms training or serving as a subject matter expert in range safety and operations. Experience with technical troubleshooting and maintenance of electronic or mechanical range systems. Completion of specialized training programs in firearms instruction, range safety, or related technical fields (e.g., certifications from organizations like the National Rifle Association, Range Safety Officer certification, or equivalent) may be required. Satisfaction of the minimum qualifications, including years of experience and service, does not entitle employees to automatic progression within the job series. Promotion to the next classification level is at the discretion of the department and the Office of Personnel Management, taking into consideration the employee’s demonstrated skills, competencies, performance, workload responsibilities, and organizational needs.
