Exhibit Coordinator

The Exhibit Coordinator is responsible for developing, planning, and managing exhibits that showcase the history, culture, and significance of the State of Arkansas. This position oversees the design, installation, and maintenance of exhibits in state museums, cultural centers, and government institutions. The Exhibit Coordinator ensures that exhibits are engaging, educational, and accessible to diverse audiences while maintaining high standards of preservation and presentation.

Typical Functions:

Develop, design, and implement permanent, temporary, and traveling exhibits that align with institutional and educational goals. Research historical and cultural topics to ensure authenticity, accuracy, and relevance of exhibits. Collaborate with curators, historians, artists, and educators to develop engaging and informative content. Maintain compliance with state and federal regulations related to exhibit design, preservation, and accessibility. Oversee installation, arrangement, and dismantling of exhibits, ensuring safety and security of artifacts and displays. Implement conservation strategies for exhibits, including appropriate lighting, climate control, and material selection. Manage exhibit storage, transportation logistics, and artifact handling to prevent damage and deterioration. Regularly inspect exhibits for wear, damage, and needed updates, coordinating necessary repairs or modifications. Design interactive and educational components that enhance visitor engagement and learning. Manage budgets, contracts, and grant funding for exhibit development and operations. Coordinate with contractors, designers, and vendors to source exhibit materials and services. Lead and supervise staff and volunteers involved in exhibit preparation, installation, and maintenance. Ensure exhibits meet ADA accessibility standards to accommodate diverse audiences. Implement safety guidelines for artifact handling, visitor interactions, and exhibit structural integrity. Maintain inventory records and documentation of exhibit pieces for tracking and reporting purposes.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Strong knowledge of exhibit design, museum curation, and storytelling techniques. Experience with display fabrication, multimedia installations, and interactive exhibit technologies. Familiarity with artifact preservation, conservation techniques, and proper handling procedures. Ability to develop project plans, manage budgets, and oversee exhibit timelines efficiently. Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. Excellent written and verbal communication skills for creating exhibit descriptions, reports, and presentations. Ability to work effectively with diverse groups including historians, artists, educators, and community entities. Experience conducting public outreach, educational programming, and guided tours. Strong problem-solving skills to address exhibit challenges, including space constraints and material limitations. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, adjusting to evolving exhibit needs and visitor feedback.

Minimum Qualifications:

At least two years of experience in exhibit development, museum curation, artifact preservation, or a related field. Satisfaction of the minimum qualifications, including years of experience and service, does not entitle employees to automatic progression within the job series. Promotion to the next classification level is at the discretion of the department and the Office of Personnel Management, taking into consideration the employee’s demonstrated skills, competencies, performance, workload responsibilities, and organizational needs.
