Environmental Health Inspector I
The Environmental Health Inspector I is an entry-level position responsible for supporting the inspection, monitoring, and enforcement of environmental health standards in various settings. Under the supervision of more senior inspectors or managers, the Environmental Health Inspector I conducts inspections, identifies potential health hazards, and assists in enforcing environmental health regulations.

Typical Functions:
Assist in conducting routine inspections of food establishments, water systems, sanitation facilities, and other public health environments to ensure compliance with health regulations. Identify and report health and safety violations to senior inspectors, making recommendations for corrective actions. Collect and analyze samples of food, water, and other materials for testing purposes. Assist in preparing inspection reports, documenting violations, and tracking corrective actions taken. Participate in public health outreach and educational efforts by providing basic information on environmental health practices to the public and businesses. Respond to public inquiries and complaints regarding environmental health concerns.
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:
Basic understanding of environmental health principles, public health safety standards, food safety, sanitation, and water quality regulations. Ability to assist in conducting inspections, collecting data, and maintaining records. Strong attention to detail and good organizational skills. Ability to learn and apply environmental health regulations and enforcement procedures. Effective communication skills to assist facility operators and the public. Ability to complete on-the-job training and coursework to obtain certification as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) within a specified time. Knowledge of basic environmental health standards and public health practices.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in environmental health, public health, biology, or a related field. Satisfaction of the minimum qualifications, including years of experience and service, does not entitle employees to automatic progression within the job series. Promotion to the next classification level is at the discretion of the department and the Office of Personnel Management, taking into consideration the employee’s demonstrated skills, competencies, performance, workload responsibilities, and organizational needs.
