Disability Psychologist

The Disability Psychologist evaluates individuals applying for disability benefits by conducting psychological assessments, interpreting mental health records, and providing recommendations regarding the applicant's ability to function in a work environment. This role focuses on determining the psychological factors that contribute to disability and ensuring compliance with applicable regulations and guidelines.

Typical Functions:

Conduct psychological evaluations and assessments to determine the impact of mental health conditions on an individual’s ability to work. Review psychological and medical records, including diagnostic testing results, to provide a comprehensive evaluation. Develop written reports detailing findings and providing recommendations for disability benefits based on psychological assessments. Collaborate with other medical and administrative staff to ensure that evaluations are complete and comply with state regulations. Stay current with developments in psychology and mental health assessments related to disability determinations. Participate in interdisciplinary meetings to discuss and review complex cases.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Strong understanding of psychological assessments, mental health conditions, and their impact on functionality. Ability to interpret psychological data and make informed decisions regarding disability claims. Familiarity with state and federal disability evaluation processes and mental health regulations. Effective written and verbal communication skills to provide clear, concise reports and collaborate with team members. Proficiency in psychological testing, diagnostic evaluation, and clinical documentation.

Minimum Qualifications:

Doctoral degree in Psychology (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) from an accredited program. Licensed Psychologist in the state of Arkansas. Minimum of two years of experience in a clinical or disability evaluation setting. Experience in mental health evaluations or disability claims is preferred. Satisfaction of the minimum qualifications, including years of experience and service, does not entitle employees to automatic progression within the job series. Promotion to the next classification level is at the discretion of the department and the Office of Personnel Management, taking into consideration the employee’s demonstrated skills, competencies, performance, workload responsibilities, and organizational needs.
