Disability Physician Consultant

The Disability Physician Consultant assists with medical evaluations of individuals applying for disability benefits by reviewing medical records, conducting specialized consultations, and providing expert advice to the disability evaluation team. This role is critical in providing detailed, specialized medical opinions on complex cases that require expert consultation.

Special Job Requirements:

Typical Functions:

Review medical records and clinical documentation submitted by disability applicants. Provide medical consultations and evaluations, particularly for complex cases requiring specialized knowledge. Offer expert recommendations based on clinical findings and disability assessment criteria. Assist in determining the medical impact of conditions on an individual’s ability to perform work-related activities. Collaborate with other healthcare professionals, attorneys, and disability evaluators to ensure accurate case reviews. Document findings and provide written reports to support disability determinations.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

In-depth understanding of medical conditions and their effects on work-related functionality. Strong diagnostic and evaluative skills to assess complex disability cases. Familiarity with state and federal disability evaluation processes and regulations. Ability to communicate medical findings clearly and concisely to non-medical professionals. Proficiency in using medical software and electronic health records for documenting evaluations.

Minimum Qualifications:

Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.) degree from an accredited medical school. Active, unrestricted medical licensure in the state of Arkansas. At least two years of clinical experience in a medical specialty or disability evaluation setting. Experience in consulting on disability evaluations or providing expert medical opinions is preferred. Satisfaction of the minimum qualifications, including years of experience and service, does not entitle employees to automatic progression within the job series. Promotion to the next classification level is at the discretion of the department and the Office of Personnel Management, taking into consideration the employee’s demonstrated skills, competencies, performance, workload responsibilities, and organizational needs.
