Disability Adjudicator III

The Disability Adjudicator III is a senior-level position responsible for making determinations regarding disability eligibility for a broad range of claims. This role requires an advanced understanding of disability laws and medical assessments. Adjudicators at this level handle complex cases but may not have the most challenging or contentious cases that fall to the Disability Adjudicator IV. They will review medical records, employment history, and other documentation to determine eligibility for benefits.

Typical Functions:

Review and evaluate medical records, vocational histories, and other relevant documentation to determine eligibility for disability benefits. Adjudicate complex disability claims that require in-depth analysis and interpretation of medical evidence. Ensure compliance with federal and state disability regulations in making eligibility determinations. Prepare written explanations of decisions, outlining the rationale for granting or denying benefits. Serve as a resource to Disability Adjudicator I and II staff for more difficult cases. Monitor the progress of disability claims and resolve any discrepancies or issues with documentation. Participate in case reviews, audits, and assist with training lower-level adjudicators.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Strong understanding of medical terminology, disabilities, and vocational assessments. In-depth knowledge of Social Security disability programs (SSDI, SSI), including application and eligibility requirements. Ability to independently assess and adjudicate disability claims with minimal supervision. Strong written communication skills to prepare clear, legally sound adjudicatory decisions. Ability to manage a caseload efficiently and accurately. Problem-solving and analytical thinking skills to resolve complex cases. Familiarity with state and federal disability law and the ability to apply these regulations effectively in complex cases.

Minimum Qualifications:

The formal education equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, sociology, biological, life sciences, or related field; plus two years of experience in Social Security disability adjudication. Satisfaction of the minimum qualifications, including years of experience and service, does not entitle employees to automatic progression within the job series. Promotion to the next classification level is at the discretion of the department and the Office of Personnel Management, taking into consideration the employee’s demonstrated skills, competencies, performance, workload responsibilities, and organizational needs.
