Deputy Warden I

The Deputy Warden I is a key supervisory position within the Arkansas Department of Corrections (ADC), providing essential leadership and management for the operational areas of a correctional facility. This role is responsible for ensuring the safety, security, and effective functioning of the institution by overseeing operational units, managing personnel, and implementing security policies and programs. As a member of the facility's senior management team, the Deputy Warden I plays a critical role in inmate rehabilitation, staff development, and regulatory compliance. The Deputy Warden I reports directly to the Warden and is a vital part of the institution's leadership team, overseeing the correctional operations to meet the mission and standards set by the Department of Corrections.

Special Job Requirements:

Typical Functions:

Assist the Warden in overseeing the daily operations of the correctional facility, ensuring compliance with state and federal laws, regulations, and standards. Supervise and manage facility staff, including hiring, training, evaluating performance, and making disciplinary decisions. Develop and implement policies and procedures to maintain a safe, secure, and orderly environment. Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of rehabilitation and reintegration programs for offenders. Prepare and manage sections of the facility’s budget, financial resources, and expenditures. Conduct regular inspections of the facility to ensure adherence to safety and security protocols. Address and resolve inmate grievances and complaints. Represent the facility in meetings with government officials, community organizations, and other stakeholders. Collaborate with other state agencies, law enforcement, and community organizations to promote public safety and offender rehabilitation. Maintain accurate records and documentation of facility operations, incidents, and decisions. Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

In-depth knowledge of correctional facility operations, including security, inmate management, and rehabilitation services. Familiarity with Arkansas state laws, regulations, and policies related to corrections and inmate care. Understanding of budgeting and resource management within a state government context. Knowledge of emergency response protocols, crisis management, and conflict resolution in a correctional setting. Strong leadership skills, with the ability to motivate and supervise a diverse team of correctional officers, support staff, and administrators. Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities, particularly in high-pressure situations. Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, for reporting, staff interaction, and coordination with external agencies. Proficiency in using correctional management software and technology to track facility operations, inmate status, and incident reporting. Ability to handle and resolve challenging and stressful situations, maintaining a calm and professional demeanor in crisis or conflict situations. Ability to develop and implement policies, procedures, and training programs to enhance the facility’s operations. Ability to assess and manage resources effectively, ensuring that operational needs are met without compromising security or safety.

Minimum Qualifications:

The formal education equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, public administration, business administration, or a related field. Five years of experience in corrections, law enforcement, or a related field, including three years in a managerial or supervisory role.
