Crime Lab Medical Examiner

The Crime Lab Medical Examiner is responsible for conducting medicolegal death investigations, performing forensic autopsies, and determining the cause and manner of death in cases under the jurisdiction of the state. This role requires expertise in forensic pathology, strong analytical skills, and the ability to provide objective medical opinions in criminal and civil cases.

Typical Functions:

Conduct medicolegal autopsies and external examinations to determine cause and manner of death. Perform toxicological and histological evaluations and interpret results to support forensic findings. Document and analyze injuries, disease processes, and post-mortem changes. Collect biological and physical evidence for forensic analysis and criminal investigations. Work collaboratively with law enforcement agencies, forensic scientists, and attorneys to aid in criminal investigations. Provide expert testimony in courts regarding forensic findings and cause of death determinations. Review investigative reports, medical records, and scene photographs to corroborate findings. Maintain detailed forensic reports and documentation in compliance with legal and scientific standards. Serve as a forensic expert and advisor to prosecutors, law enforcement, and public health officials. Explain autopsy results and forensic findings to law enforcement, legal personnel, and families with clarity and sensitivity. Ensure compliance with Arkansas laws, forensic standards, and accreditation requirements.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Expertise in forensic pathology, toxicology, and medicolegal death investigations. Strong diagnostic and analytical abilities to determine cause and manner of death. Proficiency in medical documentation, evidence collection, and forensic report writing. Ability to communicate complex medical information in clear, non-technical terms. Strong public speaking and expert testimony skills for court proceedings. Ability to make objective, fact-based conclusions from forensic evidence. Capacity to work under high-pressure situations, including mass casualty events.

Minimum Qualifications:

Must have a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy from an accredited institution; Must have completed an Anatomic Pathology Residency Program and a Forensic Pathology Fellowship Program; At least three years of experience in forensic pathology, or a related field.

Required Certificates:

Must be licensed to practice medicine in the State of Arkansas. Must be board-certified or board-eligible in Forensic Pathology by the American Board of Pathology within two (2) years of the hiring date. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
