The Court Reporter, also known as a stenographer or shorthand reporter, is a specialized professional who captures and transcribes spoken dialogue verbatim during legal proceedings, depositions, hearings, and other official events. Utilizing specialized equipment such as stenotype machines, voice recognition systems, or digital recording devices, the Court Reporter produces official written records that are essential to the judicial process. This role demands precision, swift transcription abilities, and a strong grasp of legal terminology, ensuring that transcripts are both accurate and admissible in legal settings.

Special Job Requirements:

Typical Functions:

Attend court sessions, depositions, and official meetings to record spoken words in real time using specialized shorthand equipment. Produce accurate, legible, and complete transcripts of proceedings, ensuring that every word is captured with fidelity. Review and edit transcripts promptly to ensure accuracy, completeness, and adherence to legal standards. Verify unclear or inaudible sections by consulting with relevant parties or replaying recorded segments. Compile and securely store transcripts as official records which may be used by judges, attorneys, and other legal officials. Maintain strict confidentiality regarding all sensitive or privileged information contained within the transcripts. Operate and maintain stenotype machines, voice writing equipment, or digital recorders, ensuring that all devices are functioning properly prior to proceedings. Troubleshoot technical issues on the fly to prevent delays during live hearings. Assist court personnel, attorneys, and other legal professionals by providing rapid retrieval of transcripts or reading back sections of recorded proceedings when requested. Offer real-time transcription or captioning services, particularly for the benefit of deaf or hard-of-hearing individuals.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Ability to listen intently in fast-paced environments and accurately translate spoken words into written text with high typing speeds. A meticulous approach to record-keeping, ensuring every word is transcribed correctly with minimal errors. Familiarity with stenotype machines, digital recorders, and transcription software; capability to troubleshoot and resolve equipment issues quickly. Understanding of legal terminology and procedures to ensure that all recorded data is contextually and legally accurate. High ethical standards to manage and protect sensitive or confidential information related to legal cases. Ability to remain focused and composed during lengthy proceedings and when working under pressure.

Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma or GED. Completion of a court reporting program from an accredited institution. These programs may offer certificates, diplomas, or associate degrees and cover shorthand, transcription techniques, legal terminology, and the operation of specialized transcription equipment. Ongoing Professional Development, an history of continuous learning, including attendance at workshops and courses in advanced transcription techniques may be required.
