Corrections Division Director

The Corrections Division Director is a senior executive role within the Arkansas Department of Corrections, responsible for overseeing and directing the operations, policies, and strategic initiatives of the state's correctional facilities. Special Job Requirements:

Typical Functions:

Oversee and manage the overall operations of the Division of Correction or Division of Community Correction, including inmate housing, security, rehabilitation programs, and administrative functions. Develop, implement, and enforce policies and procedures to ensure the safety and security of the facility, staff, and inmates. Supervise and provide leadership to division staff, including hiring, training, evaluating performance, and making disciplinary decisions. Ensure compliance with state and federal laws, regulations, and standards related to corrections and community corrections. Develop and manage the division’s budget, including resource allocation and financial planning. Collaborate with other departments, agencies, and external stakeholders to improve correctional programs and services. Monitor and assess the effectiveness of correctional programs and make recommendations for improvements. Conduct regular inspections of facilities to ensure safety, security, and compliance with policies and procedures. Respond to emergencies and incidents within the division, including inmate disturbances, medical emergencies, and security breaches. Prepare and maintain detailed reports and records on division operations, incidents, and inmate behavior. Represent the division in meetings, conferences, and public forums.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Advanced knowledge of correctional operations, including security, inmate management, facility operations, and rehabilitation programs. Deep understanding of state and federal correctional laws, policies, and regulations, as well as the criminal justice system. Knowledge of budgeting, financial management, and resource allocation in a government setting. Strong leadership skills, including the ability to motivate, guide, and support senior managers and staff to achieve organizational goals. Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills, with the ability to manage complex situations and resolve conflicts. Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to effectively interact with staff, government officials, the public, and external stakeholders. Ability to manage and lead large teams, ensuring alignment with strategic goals and maintaining high standards of performance and accountability. Ability to handle sensitive, confidential, and high-pressure situations with professionalism and discretion.

Minimum Qualifications:

The formal education equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, public administration, or a related field. Ten years of experience in correctional security or law enforcement, including five years in a supervisory or leadership capacity.
