Corrections Deputy Director

The Corrections Deputy Director is a senior leadership position within the Arkansas Department of Corrections, responsible for assisting in overseeing the daily operations of the state's correctional facilities and supporting the strategic direction and policy development set by the Director. The Deputy Director will manage key functional areas within the department, including security, inmate management, rehabilitation programs, and operational efficiency. The role requires an individual with strong leadership, problem-solving, and decision-making skills to ensure that the correctional system runs effectively while maintaining a safe, secure, and rehabilitative environment for both staff and inmates. The Corrections Deputy Director works closely with senior staff, oversees critical operational issues, and ensures compliance with state and federal laws governing corrections.

Special Job Requirements:

Typical Functions:

Assist the Division Director in overseeing and managing the overall operations of the division, including inmate housing, security, rehabilitation programs, and administrative functions. Develop, implement, and enforce policies and procedures to ensure the safety and security of the facility, staff, and inmates. Supervise and provide leadership to division staff, including hiring, training, evaluating performance, and making disciplinary decisions. Ensure compliance with state and federal laws, regulations, and standards related to corrections and community corrections. Assist in developing and managing the division’s budget, including resource allocation and financial planning. Collaborate with other departments, agencies, and external stakeholders to improve correctional programs and services. Monitor and assess the effectiveness of correctional programs and make recommendations for improvements. Conduct regular inspections of facilities to ensure safety, security, and compliance with policies and procedures. Respond to emergencies and incidents within the division, including inmate disturbances, medical emergencies, and security breaches. Prepare and maintain detailed reports and records on division operations, incidents, and inmate behavior. Represent the division in meetings, conferences, and public forums in the absence of the Division Director.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

In-depth knowledge of correctional facility operations, including security, inmate management, rehabilitation programs, and staff supervision. Comprehensive understanding of state and federal correctional laws, policies, and regulations, including constitutional rights, due process, and inmate safety. Familiarity with financial management practices, including budgeting, resource allocation, and cost control in a government setting. Strong leadership and management skills, with the ability to inspire, motivate, and guide senior managers and staff within the department. Excellent decision-making and problem-solving skills, especially under high-pressure and crisis situations. Ability to foster a culture of accountability, professionalism, and continuous improvement within the department. Ability to make critical decisions quickly and effectively in high-pressure situations, ensuring the safety and security of the facility and its staff.

Minimum Qualifications:

The formal education equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, public administration, or a related field. Eight years of experience in correctional security or law enforcement, including four years in a supervisory or leadership capacity.
