Corrections Chief Deputy Director
The Corrections Chief Deputy Director assists the Director in overseeing and managing the operations of the Arkansas Department of Corrections. This role ensures that all correctional facilities and programs operate efficiently, effectively, and in compliance with state and federal laws, while maintaining public safety and promoting offender rehabilitation and reintegration. The position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.

Typical Functions:
Assist the Director in the overall management and administration of the Arkansas Department of Corrections. Develop and implement strategic plans, policies, and procedures to ensure the efficient operation of correctional facilities and programs. Supervise and manage department staff, including hiring, training, evaluating performance, and making disciplinary decisions. Oversee the preparation and management of the department’s budget, financial resources, and expenditures. Ensure compliance with state and federal laws, regulations, and standards. Represent the department in meetings with government officials, community organizations, and other stakeholders. Collaborate with other state agencies, law enforcement, and community organizations to promote public safety and offender rehabilitation. Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of correctional programs and services. Prepare and present reports on the department’s activities, performance, and achievements. Serve as Acting Director in the absence of the Director. Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:
Comprehensive understanding of correctional practices, policies, and procedures. In-depth knowledge of commissary operations and related regulations. Familiarity with inventory management and procurement practices. Awareness of state and federal laws and regulations governing corrections. Knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations governing correctional institutions. Ability to plan, organize, and direct the work of a professional staff of administrators and managers. Ability to establish program goals and objectives supporting strategic plans. Ability to identify problems, evaluate alternatives, and implement effective solutions. Ability to interpret and apply laws and regulations. Ability to manage multiple projects and meet critical deadlines. Ability to train others in work procedures.
Minimum Qualifications:
The formal education equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, public administration, business, management or a related field; plus, nine years of progressively more responsible experience in a correctional system, law enforcement or a related field, including five years in a professional managerial capacity.
