Corrections Assistant Director I

The Corrections Assistant Director I is a leadership role within the Arkansas Department of Corrections responsible for supporting the operations and management of multiple correctional facilities. The position involves overseeing the administration of security, inmate management, rehabilitation programs, and staff supervision. Typical Functions:

Assist the Corrections Director and senior leadership in managing the daily operations of assigned correctional facilities. Provide oversight and guidance to facility directors and staff, ensuring compliance with safety, security, and operational standards. Monitor and assess the effectiveness of facility operations and identify areas for improvement, ensuring the efficient use of resources. Supervise and support the leadership teams within assigned facilities, including unit managers, program directors, and other supervisory staff. Assist in the recruitment, training, and development of staff, ensuring they are equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to perform their duties effectively. Conduct performance evaluations, provide constructive feedback, and support professional development to ensure high staff morale and job performance. Assist in the preparation and management of budgets for assigned facilities, ensuring the effective and efficient allocation of financial resources. Monitor expenditures, identify areas for cost-saving measures, and assist in purchasing decisions to ensure that the facilities have the necessary resources for operations.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Thorough knowledge of correctional operations, including facility management, inmate security, rehabilitation programs, and staff management. Understanding of federal and state correctional laws, policies, and regulations, including constitutional rights and inmate safety standards. Familiarity with emergency preparedness, crisis management protocols, and incident command systems in correctional environments. Strong leadership and supervisory skills, with the ability to manage and motivate diverse teams. Excellent decision-making skills, particularly in high-pressure situations, ensuring safety and operational effectiveness. Ability to oversee and improve operational efficiency while maintaining a focus on security, safety, and rehabilitation. Ability to manage staff in a diverse and challenging environment, ensuring accountability and high performance. Ability to respond effectively during emergencies, demonstrating calmness and sound decision-making under pressure.

Minimum Qualifications:

A bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, law enforcement, public administration, or a related field is required. A master’s degree in criminal justice, public administration, or a related field is preferred. A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in the correctional or criminal justice field, with at least three years of experience in a senior leadership position within a correctional or law enforcement agency
