Chemist Supervisor/Expert

The Chemist Supervisor/Expert oversees the operations of a state laboratory or chemistry unit engaged in chemical analysis, testing, and research in support of public health, environmental protection, or regulatory compliance.

Typical Functions:

The assignment of supervisory duties is determined by the hiring agency’s operational needs. Non-supervisory roles will serve as senior technical experts. Direct, schedule, and supervise the daily activities of laboratory staff performing chemical tests and analyses. Ensure adherence to safety protocols, quality control, and laboratory best practices. Develop and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs) and quality assurance protocols. Review and validate laboratory results, troubleshoot complex testing issues, and oversee instrument calibration and maintenance. Manage laboratory resources, including procurement of chemicals, equipment, and supplies within budget constraints. Coordinate with other state agencies, laboratories, and regulatory bodies to support joint initiatives or investigations. Maintain laboratory certifications, accreditations (e.g., NELAC, EPA, CLIA), and compliance documentation as required. Prepare technical reports, summaries, and data presentations for internal use or public dissemination. Maintain detailed records in accordance with state and federal guidelines. Respond to public information requests or inquiries from partner agencies regarding laboratory results or procedures.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Ability to inspire, manage, and develop a team of scientific professionals. Advanced problem-solving skills and ability to interpret complex data. Clear verbal and written communication with both technical and non-technical audiences. High level of accuracy and precision in reviewing analytical results.

Minimum Qualifications:

At least five years of experience in chemistry, chemical testing, laboratory testing, or a related field, including two years in a leadership capacity. Satisfaction of the minimum qualifications, including years of experience and service, does not entitle employees to automatic progression within the job series. Promotion to the next classification level is at the discretion of the department and the Office of Personnel Management, taking into consideration the employee’s demonstrated skills, competencies, performance, workload responsibilities, and organizational needs.
