Certified Health Educator

The Certified Health Educator (CHE) is responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating health education programs and initiatives aimed at improving the health and well-being of individuals and communities across the state of Arkansas. The position involves collaborating with local, state, and community organizations to provide accurate, culturally relevant, and evidence-based health education to diverse populations. The Certified Health Educator will work with both individuals and groups to promote healthy lifestyles, disease prevention, and the adoption of healthy behaviors. This role requires a strong understanding of health issues, educational strategies, and public health policies.

Typical Functions:

Develop and implement health education programs that address community health needs, including but not limited to nutrition, physical activity, smoking cessation, chronic disease management, mental health, and substance abuse prevention. Tailor programs to meet the specific needs of targeted populations (e.g., children, adolescents, seniors, underserved populations). Ensure that programs are culturally competent, evidence-based, and compliant with state health guidelines. Develop educational materials, such as brochures, pamphlets, presentations, and digital content, to educate the public on health topics. Ensure materials are accurate, engaging, accessible, and compliant with state and federal health regulations. Conduct workshops, seminars, and training sessions for individuals and community groups to improve health literacy and promote healthy behavior changes. Provide specialized education and training to healthcare providers, schools, businesses, and other stakeholders to enhance their capacity for health promotion and disease prevention. Plan and execute public health campaigns to raise awareness about prevalent health issues, such as vaccination, mental health, and chronic disease prevention. Use multiple channels (print, social media, events) to engage the community and encourage participation in health promotion programs. Serve as a resource for community-based organizations, local health departments, schools, and other entities to enhance their health education and wellness initiatives. Provide technical assistance to schools, businesses, and government agencies to implement effective health promotion policies and practices. Work directly with at-risk populations to educate and empower them to make healthier decisions. Maintain accurate records of health education activities, including participant data, program outcomes, and evaluation results. Prepare and present reports on program progress, outcomes, and recommendations for improvement to leadership and other stakeholders. Represent the department at community events, conferences, and public forums to raise awareness about health initiatives and services.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present complex health information in an understandable and engaging manner. Strong public speaking and presentation skills, comfortable addressing diverse audiences. Ability to build rapport and work collaboratively with community members, stakeholders, and colleagues from various disciplines. Strong counseling skills for providing one-on-one health education and guidance. Proficiency in collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data to assess program effectiveness. Ability to use health data to make evidence-based recommendations and improvements. Experience in planning and executing public health campaigns and community outreach initiatives. Ability to adjust strategies and approaches based on evolving community needs, health trends, and resource availability.

Minimum Qualifications:

A bachelor’s degree in public health, health education, health promotion, or a related field is required, plus two (2) years of experience in health education, public health promotion, or a related field. Satisfaction of the minimum qualifications, including years of experience and service, does not entitle employees to automatic progression within the job series. Promotion to the next classification level is at the discretion of the department and the Office of Personnel Management, taking into consideration the employee’s demonstrated skills, competencies, performance, workload responsibilities, and organizational needs.

Required Certificates:

Certified as a Certified Health Education Specialist or a Certified Professional Health Educator by the Arkansas Board of Health Education in accordance with ACA 17-53-206. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
