Biologist Supervisor/Expert

The Biologist Supervisor/Expert is responsible for overseeing and guiding professional biological staff engaged in scientific research, environmental assessment, wildlife or aquatic management, conservation programs, or habitat restoration. This leadership position supports the implementation of agency strategies, ensures compliance with environmental laws and policies, and promotes science-based decision-making.

Typical Functions:

The assignment of supervisory duties is determined by the hiring agency’s operational needs. Non-supervisory roles will serve as senior technical experts. Supervise a team of biologists, technicians, or scientific staff in daily operations, project assignments, and program deliverables. Plan, delegate, and monitor fieldwork, research studies, laboratory analysis, or conservation initiatives. Review and approve technical reports, biological data, and scientific publications for accuracy and quality. Oversee biological field investigations involving flora, fauna, aquatic systems, or ecological habitats. Ensure proper application of scientific methodologies and sampling techniques. Coordinate large-scale monitoring programs or special studies aligned with agency goals. Coordinate with federal, state, and local agencies, landowners, or stakeholders on conservation projects and policy development. Interpret and ensure compliance with environmental regulations, permits, and biological assessments. Represent the agency at public meetings, conferences, and stakeholder workshops. Provide training, technical support, and career development opportunities to assigned personnel. Mentor junior biologists and interns in scientific writing, grant preparation, and project management. Guide data collection, management, and analysis using statistical and GIS tools. Prepare technical documents, reports, grant proposals, and policy recommendations.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including scientific reporting and public presentations. Resourceful and adaptive in resolving operational, environmental, or regulatory challenges. Precision in data collection, documentation, and project execution. Ability to manage multiple projects, timelines, and staff schedules effectively.

Minimum Qualifications:

At least five years of experience in biology, or a related field, including two years in a leadership capacity. Satisfaction of the minimum qualifications, including years of experience and service, does not entitle employees to automatic progression within the job series. Promotion to the next classification level is at the discretion of the department and the Office of Personnel Management, taking into consideration the employee’s demonstrated skills, competencies, performance, workload responsibilities, and organizational needs.
