Assistant Parks Director

The Assistant Park Director supports the overall management and operations of a state park, ensuring the preservation, enhancement, and visitor experience of natural, cultural, and recreational resources. This role assists in park administration, staff supervision, maintenance oversight, programming, and visitor engagement while upholding state policies and environmental standards.

Typical Functions:

Assist the Park Director in managing daily operations, ensuring compliance with state regulations and safety standards. Oversee park facilities, trails, and recreational areas, coordinating maintenance and resource conservation efforts. Monitor budgeting, procurement, and revenue-generating activities, including concessions, permits, and rentals. Implement and enforce policies related to park safety, environmental conservation, and visitor regulations. Supervise park staff, seasonal employees, and volunteers, ensuring effective training and performance. Coordinate staff scheduling, assignments, and development programs to enhance team productivity. Assist in planning and overseeing interpretive programs, special events, and community outreach initiatives. Address visitor concerns, inquiries, and emergency situations, ensuring prompt and courteous resolution. Assist in trail maintenance, habitat restoration, and facility improvements to promote sustainability. Oversee risk management procedures, ensuring staff and visitor adherence to safety protocols. Respond to emergencies, weather-related incidents, and law enforcement concerns as needed. Conduct inspections of park infrastructure, equipment, and public areas to identify hazards and necessary repairs. Supervises staff by interviewing, recommending staff for hire/fire, assigning and reviewing work, counseling, and evaluating the performance of incumbents.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Strong supervisory abilities to lead a diverse team of employees and volunteers. Effective decision-making and problem-solving skills to address park challenges efficiently. Ability to delegate tasks, set priorities, and manage multiple projects simultaneously. Excellent written and verbal communication skills for reporting, public engagement, and staff coordination. Ability to interact professionally with visitors, government officials, and community stakeholders. Proficiency in budgeting, record-keeping, and operational reporting. Ability to interpret and implement state park policies, regulations, and conservation guidelines. Knowledge of facility maintenance, land management, and recreational programming. Familiarity with natural resource management, environmental education, and park conservation. Experience in trail maintenance, facility operations, and recreational activity planning. Understanding of basic first aid, CPR, and emergency response protocols.

Minimum Qualifications:

At least four years of experience in park management, natural resource conservation, recreation administration, or a related field, including two years in a leadership capacity.
