ASP Sergeant

The ASP Sergeant is a frontline supervisor responsible for leading patrol officers, investigators, and support personnel in enforcing state laws and maintaining public safety. This role provides tactical leadership, operational oversight, and administrative support to ensure efficient law enforcement operations. The Sergeant serves as the primary link between command staff and officers, ensuring compliance with department policies and regulations.

Typical Functions:

Direct, supervise, and evaluate officers and support staff. Oversee daily patrol operations, investigations, and law enforcement activities within the assigned unit. Provide guidance, mentorship, and training to officers, ensuring professional development. Serve as the acting Lieutenant or command officer in their absence. Foster a culture of accountability, professionalism, and ethical policing. Assign, coordinate, and review patrol and investigative duties. Respond to and supervise officers at crime scenes, high-risk incidents, and critical situations. Ensure proper execution of arrests, search warrants, and evidence collection. Collaborate with other law enforcement agencies to support joint operations. Evaluate crime patterns, intelligence reports, and public safety risks to adjust strategies accordingly. Act as the incident commander for critical incidents, active crime scenes, and tactical responses. Supervise officers during emergency response situations, ensuring appropriate procedures are followed. Provide direction in crisis situations, including hostage situations, natural disasters, and mass disturbances. Conduct performance evaluations, officer assessments, and remedial training. Ensure officers remain proficient in firearms, defensive tactics, de-escalation techniques, and emergency response procedures. Implement continuous training programs to enhance investigative, tactical, and community policing skills. Build positive relationships with community members, organizations, and local businesses. Assist in developing crime prevention strategies and public safety initiatives. Represent the department at community meetings, outreach events, and inter-agency collaborations. Prepare and review incident reports, case files, and operational briefings. Ensure compliance with state and federal laws, department policies, and procedural guidelines. Conduct internal investigations regarding officer conduct and performance. Oversee evidence handling, use-of-force reports, and procedural audits.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Thorough knowledge of criminal law, law enforcement procedures, investigative techniques, and emergency response operations. Proficiency in supervising patrol operations, managing crime scenes, emergency response coordination, and conducting investigations. Ability to analyze intelligence reports, risk assessments, and security threats to inform decision-making. Knowledge of law enforcement technology, data systems, and reporting tools. Excellent communication and negotiation skills for working with agencies, officials, and the public. Ability to work well in crisis conditions.

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum of three years of law enforcement experience.

Required Certificates:

Must be certified as a Law Enforcement Officer by the State of Arkansas in accordance with ACA 12-9-106. Must possess a valid Arkansas driver’s license. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
