Arkansas Sentencing Commission Director

The Arkansas Sentencing Commission Director is responsible for overseeing the work of the Arkansas Sentencing Commission, including the development and implementation of sentencing standards, legislative recommendations, and correctional plans. This position ensures compliance with sentencing guidelines and collaborates with various departments and agencies. The Corrections Sentencing Commission Director is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.

Special Job Requirements:

Typical Functions:

Compile and oversee the work of the Arkansas Sentencing Commission, including voluntary sentencing standards, legislative recommendations, balanced correctional plans, and fiscal impact assessments for proposed legislation. Collaborate with the Administrative Office of the Courts to implement an integrated sentencing order. Coordinate with Division of Correction and Division of Community Correction directors to develop intake processes. Conduct continuing legal education regarding the sentencing guidelines. Supervise office staff and manage daily operations of the commission. Prepare and maintain reports on compliance with sentencing guidelines and other relevant data. Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure the effective operation of the commission. Represent the commission in meetings, conferences, and public forums. Monitor and assess the impact of practices, policies, and existing laws on the correctional resources of the state. Provide guidance and support to staff and stakeholders on sentencing-related matters.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

In-depth understanding of sentencing law in the state of Arkansas. Familiarity with department policies and procedures. Knowledge of the legislative process and administrative rule promulgation. Knowledge of public safety and security methods.

Minimum Qualifications:

The formal education equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, sociology, business administration or a related area; plus 4 years of experience in criminal justice or a related field, including 3 years in a supervisory or leadership capacity.
