Aeronautics Director

The Aeronautics Director provides strategic leadership and oversight for the development, regulation, and promotion of aeronautical operations within the state. This role involves managing aviation-related programs, fostering partnerships with public and private entities, ensuring compliance with pre-determined aviation laws and standards, and advancing innovations in aeronautics. The Director serves as the primary advisor to other governmental agencies on aviation matters and plays a pivotal role in enhancing the safety, efficiency, and economic impact of aeronautical activities. Special Job Requirements:

Typical Functions:

Develop and implement strategic plans for aeronautical programs and activities. Oversee the administration of aviation programs, including airport development, airspace management, and aviation safety initiatives. Ensure compliance with federal and state aviation laws, regulations, and standards. Collaborate with federal aviation authorities, airport managers, and a variety of assorted personnel to address aviation needs and challenges. Promote innovation and economic growth in aeronautics, including fostering research and development in aviation technologies. Represent the agency in public forums, industry events, and legislative sessions. Monitor trends and emerging issues in the aviation sector to adapt strategies and policies accordingly. Supervise agency personnel, fostering a collaborative and results-oriented work environment. Manage the agency’s budget, resources, and funding opportunities. Advocate for funding and policy support for aeronautical programs and infrastructure.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in aviation management, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, aerospace engineering, aeronautical engineering, transportation, public administration, or a related field. Minimum of 10 years of experience in aviation management, aeronautics, or a related field. Comprehensive knowledge of federal and state aviation regulations and industry standards. Proven track record in strategic planning and policy development. Minimum of 400 total flight hours with specific proficiency in multi-engine operations, ordinarily a minimum of 30 hours in the multi-engine category.

Required Certificates:

Any person employed as the Director of the Division of Aeronautics shall possess the qualifications of a multi-engine commercial pilot. Must possess a valid Commercial Pilot License with a multi-engine rating. Must hold a current Federal Aviation Administration Medical Certificate to legally operate commercial flights. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
